Georgia, U.S.A.
Welcome to Atlanta, Georgia.
Atlanta is the capital of Georgia, and the largest city in the state with around 5.5 million people in the metropolitan area. This burgeoning city was established in 1837 at the intersection of two railroad lines, and grew into a national center of commerce post the Civil War. Today, Atlanta is still the primary transportation hub of the Southeastern United States and the location of HartsfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport the busiest airport in the world. Even though Atlanta is situated in the South, the modern city is no longer typically Southern. Thanks to a large population of foreign immigrants and migrants from different parts of the U.S, Atlanta has become a vibrant and diverse city. While Atlanta still has a Southern foundation, the multicultural features are strongly displayed in the many colorful businesses and restaurants, the vivid arts district, quirky neighborhoods and ethnic enclaves. Atlanta offers plenty of things to see and do for both visitors and residents, ranging from arts and theater to sports events, shopping to dining. Culture buffs can rejoice in the fact that Atlanta is home to several major performing arts institutions, including the Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Ballet, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Alliance Theatre. A must-visit historical landmark is the Fox Theatre which hosts a plethora of Broadway shows and attracts visitors from all over. Besides the renowned Arts District on Santa Fe, Atlanta is home to some significant art museums; including the High Museum of Art, one of the most visited art institutions in the world. Music lovers should know that Atlanta has played a notable role in the history of American music styles, starting in the 1920s as a country music center. In the 1960s, the city hosted the Atlanta International Pop Festival, a precursor to Woodstock. Atlanta has also been a center for Southern Rock and the hip-hop music scene, as well as punk rock and other styles. The city of Atlanta receives over 35 million visitors a year, and with good reason! One of the biggest attractions is the Georgia Aquarium, the world's largest indoor aquarium. Other tourist traps include the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, World of Coca-Cola, College Football Hall of Fame and a long list of other places. Green space is abundant in this City in a Forest, and the city has an unusual amount of both trees and parks. In fact, Atlanta houses 343 parks, natural preserves and gardens. One of the more popular ones is the Atlanta Botanical Garden and the Grant Park, and in the latter you will also find the immensely popular Zoo Atlanta. Atlanta is also known both as a major sports city as well as a significant center for higher education. The city is home to three major franchise teams: the Atlanta Braves (baseball), the Atlanta Hawks (basketball) and the Atlanta Falcons (football). Over the years, many large sports events, including the Super Bowl, have been held in the city. The stadiums downtown, which include the Turner Field and Georgia Dome, are massive tourist attractions. As far as schools are concerned, Atlanta is home to more than 30 colleges and universities. Among of the most prominent public universities is the Georgia Institute of Technology one of the U.S's top ten educational institutions of its kind. Finally, most people know Atlanta as somewhat of a film-hub, with much of Hollywood's movie production moving over for the lower taxes. Some of the productions include The Walking Dead', Vampire Diaries', Captain America' and a long list of other large shows and movies. If you're looking for a city with flavor, diversity, excitement and happenings, set against a southern backdrop; Atlanta just may be your place.
