A SAN FRANCISCO SUBURB
Welcome to Antioch, California.
The City of Antioch is located in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, and is home to little over 100,000 people. Although technically Antioch is a suburb of San Francisco and Oakland, it is in fact one of the oldest towns in California. Antioch was founded in 1850, and right after a strike of luck during the gold rush, there was a plague that nearly wiped out the entire city. Brothers William and Joseph Smith, who named the town Smith's landing, initially founded the town. In 1851 however, the town appointed a new minister who pushed for the town to be named after the biblical city of Antioch. Antioch is today a vast community with a rich heritage, and there is a total of four spots here listed in the National Register of Historic Places: The Black Diamond Mines, Roswell Butler Hard House, Riverview Union High School Building and the Shannon-Williamson Ranch. Culture lovers can enjoy everything from classic films and live theatre to symphonies and ballet at the El Campanil Theatre, a historic gem that has been open since 1928 in downtown Antioch. Antioch also boasts The Arts & Cultural Foundation of Antioch, which provides education in graphic arts, sculpture, performance arts and more. Curious visitors should also check out the Lynn House Gallery, the Antioch Historical Society Museum and the Rivertown Art Center for more top-notch cultural treats!
