Georgia, U.S.A.
Welcome to Albany, Georgia.
Albany is the county seat of Dougherty County and is the eight-largest city in Georgia with a population of around 77,000 people. A man named Nelson Tift founded the city in 1836, with the vision of creating a trade-center as prosperous as Albany in New York. The city grew with its cotton plantations during the 1800s, and later as a railroad hub during the 1900s. Albany's industry and commerce flourished thanks to the railroad, and so did the arts community. Today, Albany is a burgeoning city with tons of development. One of the more exciting things the city has done is imitate its main natural resource, the Fling River, by building a gigantic aquarium. The Flint RiverQuarium is filled with plants, fish and reptiles found in the real river, while realistic sound effects are provided by a surround system. The city has plenty of park space, and the Riverfront Park features wide views of the river, while the Turtle Grove Park offers play areas and riverside trails. If you hike up the RiverFront Trail, you'll eventually end up at Chechaw, Nature's Playground, and Radium Springs Garden, one of Georgia's own Seven Natural Wonders. If you're looking for some culture and entertainment, visit the Ray Charles Plaza where you can listen to the tunes of exquisite piano, or check out the recently upgraded Thronateeska Heritage Center. The heritage center features Wetherbee Planetarium, the Science Discovery Center as well as the Museum of History. Other cool places to look up are the Tour of Civil Rights Institute, where you can learn about the city's civil and human rights history, and the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, a place where Martin Luther King's held countless speeches. Art connoisseurs can revel in first-class creations at the Art Museum of Albany, and drama enthusiasts can watch plays at the Theatre Albany. While grown-ups experience their fill of culture, kids can enjoy the All American Fun Park, which features an arcade, go-carts, miniature golf, laser tag and more. When you're done exploring the spectacular nature and exciting attractions, rest up at one of the many hotels and the get a bite at one of the many great restaurants. In Albany, you're in good hands every step of the way!
