Welcome to Abilene, Texas.
The City of Abilene is situated approximately 180 miles west of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, near the geographical center of the state. With around 120,000 residents, Abilene is the seat of Taylor County in Texas Midwest. Abilene is a city that has something for everyone to enjoy, which is perhaps why it is commonly described as the Future Great City of West Texas. The city was established in March 1881, subsequent to the establishment of Texas & Pacific Railroad. The railroad allowed Abilene to grow as a regional center for distribution, commerce, industry and transportation; and today the city boasts a large assortment of schools lodging, dining, culture and shopping opportunities. You don't need to venture to the big cities to get quality amenities everything is right here in Abilene, Texas! The Historic Downtown Abilene is a treat in itself, with restored historic buildings housing a plethora of stores, dining establishments and culture venues. Head down Cypress Street where you'll find lots of commercial activity, with spectacular features like the Paramount Theater. The theater is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and is a fully restored art deco movie theater with distinct interior. Inside Paramount Theater is a ceiling with slow drifting clouds and twinkling stars on a bright blue sky, a wonderful addition that amplifies the experience of numerous films, plays and concerts held throughout the year. Head two blocks down the street and explore the Grace Cultural Center, a 1909 hotel that is home to a history museum, an art museum and an interactive children's museum. Abilene is home to a vibrant performing arts scene, including an opera company, a philharmonic orchestra, two community theater troupes, university theaters and plenty more. For outdoor recreation, residents and visitors can enjoy a total of 26 capacious parks. The biggest one is Nelson Park, which is situated across from the West Texas Fair Grounds, and features a lake, playgrounds, a cute duck pond and a festival garden. If you're in the area, bring the kids and check out the Abilene Zoo to explore more than 600 animals from around the globe!
