About San Antonio
San Antonio is located in the south-central part of Texas, and is the second most populated city in the state with just north of 1.4 million inhabitants. This puts it on the list as the seventh most populated city in the U.S and it is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. Locals describe it as A Big City without the Big City feel. San Antonio is one of few large cities in Texas that provides a vivid downtown area, and hence it is suitable for those who desire an active city center. San Antonio was named after Saint Antony of Padua, a Portuguese Catholic Priest who came to the area on a Spanish expedition. Subsequent to their arrival, San Antonio grew to such a degree that it in fact became the largest Spanish settlement in Texas; it was designated as the capital of the Spanish. San Antonio has many attractions for both tourists and locals. The Alamo Mission, a former Roman Catholic mission and fortress compound, pulls in 25 million visitors per year. Another popular destination in San Antonio is the River Walk, a restored urban river that travels through the Downtown area, beautifully lined with shops, bars and restaurants. After a day of shopping and dining, one may finish the evening with a play at the Arneston River Theatre. During the holiday season, this area is decorated with lights and blends the traditional Christmas feel with the local sounds of folkloric and flamenco music. During spring, one might enjoy the beloved tradition of Fiesta San Antonio, a yearly parade honoring the heroes of the Alamo and San Jacinto battles. Sport lovers can catch a game at the AT&T center with home NBA team San Antonio Spurs, and families can bring their kids to SeaWorld after an authentic taco lunch in the popular Market Square. This city is bursting with culture, and it even has Texas first museum of modern art, McNay Art Museum, within its realms. For more traditional pieces, visit the San Antonio Museum of art situated right by the beautiful river walk.
