Tulsa is situated on the rushing Arkansas River at the foothills of the Ozark Mountains, in northeast Oklahoma, in a region called Green Country. The city is the second largest in the state with around 398,120 residents, a number that is consistently growing. Tulsa was long nicknamed Oil Capital of the World, as it played a major role in the American oil industry during the better part of the 20th century.
Today Tulsa is considered the cultural and arts center of Oklahoma, and the city boasts two world-renowned art museums, several professional opera and ballet companies and one of the largest collections of art deco buildings in the country. Tulsa has been named one of America's most livable large cities by prominent media outlets like Forbes Magazines, and in 2009, FDI Magazine ranked the city No.8 in the country for cities of the future.
Walking through the City of Tulsa is a visual treat, especially in older neighborhoods like downtown and midtown, where the art deco architecture is particularly evident. Several prominent structures of this style, such as the Mid-Continent Tower, the Boston Avenue Methodist Church and the Philtower, have attracted events promoting architectural preservation. In addition to art-deco styles, Tulsa also features several large edifices including the Cityplex Tower, and unique structures such as the Oral Roberts University. The university is built-in Post-Modern Futuristic style; with gold structures, jetting edges and transparent, varying shapes.
Shopping districts can be found in several neighborhoods, with the more upscale retail stores being focused around Utica Square in Midtown. The southern half of the city features some of the state's largest shopping malls, including the Woodland Hills Mall. Golf enthusiasts can head to the Southern Hills Country Club, while outdoor adventurers can check out the Mohawk Park, the nation's third-largest city park. The Mohawk Park is one of many green spaces in Tulsa, which boasts more an impressive 135 public parks!
If you visit to Tulsa, prepare for a city of beauty, flavors, diversity and culture the list is endless of what this beautiful spot on the map has to offer!
