About Poncey-Highland
Welcome to Poncey-Highland, Atlanta. This neighborhood is located in east Atlanta, just south of the Virginia-Highland area. Poncey-Highland is named after the intersection of East and West Ponce Avenue, and North Highland Avenue. The neighborhood was established in the early 18th century and is bordered by Druid Hills, Candler Park and Little Five Points. Residents of the neighborhood have access to the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum, which houses both exhibitions of the Carter presidency as well as plenty of reading material on the subject. The Carter Center was built in 1982 on a piece of land that was previously known as the Copenhill neighborhood. Poncey-Highland boasts several historic landmarks including the Ford Motor Company Assembly Plant, the Briarcliff Plaza, as well as the Clermont Hotel (home to Clermont Lounge “Atlanta’s Oldest Stripclub”) and Manuel’s Tavern. The latter is one of Atlanta’s oldest taverns and known as a political hangout where many deals have been made. The neon-lit corner of Ponce and Highland Avenue could be seen as the entry point of the neighborhood, and once inside you will notice the many ornate buildings such as the Druid Hills Baptist Church and the Majestic Diner. The Majestic Diner is worth a visit for some classic American food; the place has been serving the same eggs, hash browns and milkshakes since the 1920s. While much of these iconic buildings comprise the essence of the neighborhood and it’s rich past, it has changed quite dramatically in the past ten years. Massive redevelopment has taken place, and the area is now home to numerous modern restaurants as well as middle-class and upscale homes filled with newly arrived residents. For first-class entertainment, definitely check out the historical Plaza Theatre, a beloved community gem that has been running movies and holding film festivals since 1939.
