About Laredo
Welcome to Laredo, Texas. Laredo is located on the north bank of the Rio Grande River in South Texas, across from Nuevo Laredo in Tamaulipas, Mexico. With a population of around 250,300, it is the 10th most populous city in the state of Texas and the county seat of Webb County. The city and its Mexican neighbor together form the Metropolitan area of Laredo-Nuevo Laredo, which is home to around 636,500 people. The City of Laredo is much dependent on its international trade with Mexico, and most major transportation companies have a facility in Laredo. There are two large airports in the Metropolitan area: Laredo International Airport on the American side, Queltzalcoati International Airport on the Mexican side. Laredo was founded in 1755, and grew from a modest villa to the capital of the old Republic of the Rio Grande, to what eventually became the largest inland port on the United States-Mexican Border. Today the city features a total of four international bridges and one railway bridge. Laredo offers excellent retail, which attracts shoppers from both Northern Mexico and South Texas. There re numerous great malls, including the Outlet Shoppes at Laredo, Laredo Town Center and dozens of other shopping centers. The city also offers plenty of attractions, including the Republic of the Rio Grande Capitol Building Museum, which showcases memorabilia from the short-lived Republic of Rio Grande. Those who enjoy art can stop by the Laredo Center for the Arts in downtown Laredo, houses three galleries and community events for both adults and children. Laredo also boasts a professional soccer team, the Heat, as well as a baseball team, Laredo Lemurs. The city even has its own women’s full contact football team, the Laredo Roses. If you’re looking to experience Laredo’s local culture and flavor, come during one of the many festivals throughout the year. The biggest one is the Washington’s Birthday Celebration in February, which attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists. Other festivals include the Jalapeno Festival, Border Beer Fest, Stockmen’s Ball, Princess Pocahontas Pageant and a long list of others. Don’t forget to learn a little Spanish before you come, because “Spanglish” is more or less the official language in Laredo!
