About Shreveport
Shreveport is situated along the Red River of Louisiana, and with nearly 200,000 residents it is the third largest city in the state. The Shreve Town Company founded the city in 1836; a corporation established for the purpose of developing a town and meeting point at the juncture of Red River and the Texas Trail. Today, the Shreveport comprises the commercial and cultural center of the Ark-La-Tex region, where the three states Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas meet. The city has evolved into a service community, with especially rapid growth in the gaming industry. Shreveport is host to numerous riverboat casinos, and was second only to New Orleans in tourism, before the Hurricane Katrina. Some of the casinos include the Sam's Town Casino, Eldorado Casino, Horseshoe casino and Diamond Jacks Casino. For dining, wining and shopping, head to the Louisiana Boardwalk; a 550,000 square foot shopping and entertainment complex in Bossier City, just across the river. The center features outlets, restaurants, a movie theater and a bowling complex. One of the more historically significant areas in Shreveport is the Highland section along Fairfield Avenue. This part of town is home to more than a half-dozen homes designated as historic, including residences once occupied by people like Broadway director Joshua Logan and former governor Ruffin Pleasant. One of the least known facts about Shreveport is that it is actually a major movie production hub. Thanks to the generous tax incentives offered by the state, Louisiana boasts the third largest film industry in the country, only behind California and New York. Louisiana is often nicknamed Hollywood South, and Shreveport can brag its own share of fame with movies like The Guardian, Factory Girl and The Mist to only name a fraction.
