About Lancaster
The Antelope Valley was once home to the Piute Indians, and the original settlement started with the Southern Pacific Railroad, where it is believed that the name Lancaster first was used. The origin of the name is unclear, but one theory states that it was the surname to one of the railroad station clerks. Thanks to plenty of rain and a lucrative farming community, Lancaster was a booming city by 1890. Historic sites worth visiting include the Western Hotel from 1886, which is the oldest standing structure in Lancaster, and currently a museum under the California Historic Site program. More modern attractions are also available, such as the Aerospace Walk of Honor, where test pilots associated with Edwards Air Force Base are celebrated. Aircraft enthusiasts may even take a peak at real planes like the Boeing Plaza! As a recreational city, Lancaster has plenty of parks that allow for cozy picnics, and numerous play grounds for the kids. The parklands also include tournament-level sports facilities at Big 8 Softball Complex and the Lancaster National Soccer Center. The city is rich in original nature as well, and the Prime Desert Woodland Preserve allows for refreshing hikes and educational tours in the pristine landscape of the High Desert. Cultivated individuals have a plethora to indulge in with the Lancaster Performing Arts Center offering everything from community theatre to classical music and dance. This distinguished culture spot draws performing celebrities from all over the world in every genre. Fun events to attend throughout the year include the California Poppy Festival, which draws upward of 60,000 guests each spring. The reason for the festival is the California Poppy Reserve right outside of Lancaster, which boasts one of California's richest crops of the state flower.
