About Columbus
Columbus is the county seat of Muscogee County, and is situated around 100 miles southwest of Atlanta. Situated in the heart of the Chattahoochee Valley with around 203,000 residents, Columbus is the second-largest city in Georgia. Best Life and The Daily Beast have ranked the City of Columbus among the top 100 places both to live and to raise a family in America. The city was founded in 1828, and was named after Christopher Columbus. Its location by the Chattahoochee River allowed the city to connect with the rest of the world and trade cotton internationally, via the seaport of New Orleans. With the addition of a railroad in the 1850s, Columbus further expanded as a commercial hub. Textile mills began to pop up along the river, bringing a new industry to the previously agricultural area. A decade later, the city had turned into one of the most important industrial centers of the South, earning the nickname the Lowell of the South in reference to a similar textile mill town in Massachusetts. Modern Columbus is divided in five areas. Downtown, or Uptown, is the city's focal point and business district. This part of town features lots of historic architecture and landmarks, with places like the Columbus Historic Riverfront Industrial District and the Mott House; the old headquarters of General James H. Wilson of the Civil War. East Columbus is the largest area in the city, and is home to the biggest golf course in the city, Bull Creek Golf Course. Midtown is where you will find many private residences, and plenty of commercial activity. This part of the city features two huge indoor and outdoor malls: Peachtree Mall and The Landings. North Columbus is a diverse suburban area and home to many upscale neighborhoods like Green Island Hills; as well as the Columbus Park Crossing, a major outdoor strip mall. Finally, South Columbus is situated just below MidTown and is home to a large military population. Hence, this area is also where you'll find the National Infantry Museum, where exhibitions are held in honor of the history of the infantry forces in the U.S. Army. For more culture, residents can choose between numerous venues. In terms of American History, the Columbus Museum and the National Civil War Naval Museum are two excellent options. For something more contemporary, check out the Coca-Cola Space Science Center, which features four flight simulators and a planetarium. In terms of music and theater, the city has several great venues, including the River Center for the Performing Arts and the Springer Opera House. Finally, Columbus is home to around 50 parks, 4 recreation centers, and the 1,579-acre Standing Boy Creek Street Park.
