With around 27,000 residents, Encino is an affluent suburb in the San Fernando Valley. The neighborhood has a long history that goes all the way back to 1769, when the Spanish Portola expedition brought the first Europeans to the inland areas of California. The travelers stayed two nights in a Native American village near what is now Los Encinos State Historic Park. A Franciscan missionary named Fray Juan Cresni was part of the expedition, and named the valley El Valley de Santa Cataline de Bononia de Los Encinos meaning The Valley of St. Catherine of Bononia of the Oaks. Encino was eventually named after the 1845 ranch Rancho Los Encinos, translating to Ranch of Oak Trees. If you're interested in learning more about both Los Angeles' and Encino's history, visit the historic park with its original nine-room de la Ossa Adobe, Garner building, and blacksmith shop.
