About Encino
With around 27,000 residents, Encino is an affluent suburb in the San Fernando Valley. The neighborhood has a long history that goes all the way back to 1769, when the Spanish Portola expedition brought the first Europeans to the inland areas of California. The travelers stayed two nights in a Native American village near what is now Los Encinos State Historic Park. A Franciscan missionary named Fray Juan Cresni was part of the expedition, and named the valley El Valley de Santa Cataline de Bononia de Los Encinos meaning The Valley of St. Catherine of Bononia of the Oaks. Encino was eventually named after the 1845 ranch Rancho Los Encinos, translating to Ranch of Oak Trees. If you're interested in learning more about both Los Angeles' and Encino's history, visit the historic park with its original nine-room de la Ossa Adobe, Garner building, and blacksmith shop. Also worth stopping by is the Encino Oak Tree monument at the corner of Ventura Boulevard and Louise Avenue. The tree stood proudly for over a thousand years, but died in 1998 after El Nino tore it down. Today, the family oriented neighborhood is home to three public and eight private schools, and includes a great number of park spaces to enjoy. The Sepulveda Basin Recreation sits in the area and includes the Woodley Worel/Magnus Cricket Complex with the four best grass cricked pitches in the United States. The park also features a the Encino Golf Course and Balboa Golf Course, where golf enthusiasts can try their skills at a total of 36 challenging holes. Fitness enthusiasts can head to the Balboa Sports Complex, which offers a baseball diamond, a football field, volleyball, soccer and basketball courts, as well as a playground and an indoor gymnasium. If your thing is more in the lines of landscaping, check out the Sepulveda Garden Center, a 16-acre community garden area with 420 garden-plots. In terms of shopping, service and dining; there are over 3,600 businesses established in Encino, so there's no lack of variety in neither employment opportunities or conveniences!
