About Greensboro
With a population of around 277,000, Greensboro is the largest city in North Carolina. The city got its name after Major General Nathanael Greene, commander of the American forces at the Battle of Guilford Court House. Although the Americans eventually lost the battle, he was still considered an honorable fighter who caused notable damage to the British Army. Once a thick forest, the small village evolved and grew into a city upon the installation of a rail line in the mid 1700s. Because of its role as a major transportation hub, it became known as the Gate City, and the economy grew thanks to the freight back and forth from the many textile mills around the city. Once marked as a blue-collar mill town, the city is now more known as the Tournament Town, thanks to its many athletic venues. Stadiums, courts, fields and pools can be found across the city and Greensboro has hosted major events like the ACC basketball tournaments and the U.S Figure Skating Championship. The Greensboro Coliseum employs more people than the legendary Cone Mills, a place that was once known as the world's largest producer of denim. Even if you are not interested in sports, Greensboro offers a ton of entertainment. Museums, theaters, parks, science fairs, and even ghost tours are only a few of the things that you can occupy yourself with here. Families can enjoy a day at the Wet N Wild Emerald Pointe waterpark, and gourmets can tickle their palates at the Tour De Food tasting adventure the options are endless in Greensboro!
