The history of Walnut Creek goes back a long way, to the first American settlers following the Mexican-American war and a small settlement called The Corners a name derived from it being the place where roads from Pacheco and Lafayette met.
The first town settler was William Slusher, who in 1849 Creek built a dwelling called Nuts Creek on the bank of today's Walnut Creek. In 1855, a man named Milo Hough from Lafayette built a hotel, which he called Walnut Creek House. This was the beginning of what is now the city's Main Street, and twenty years after the building of the hotel site, the community changed its name from The Corners to Walnut Creek.
This green city owns an astonishing amount of open space, as in 1974 Walnut Creek voters approved a $6.7 million bond measure, which allowed Walnut Creek to purchase 1,800 acres of undeveloped hillsides, ridge lines, and park sites.
The city is home to parts of Lime Ridge, Shell Ridge, Acalanes and Sugarloaf Open Space.
