Murfreesboro is the seat of Rutherford County, and the center of population in Tennessee with around 121,000 residents. The city is home to the Middle Tennessee State University, which is the largest undergraduate university in the state. Established in the early 19th century, Murfreesboro was first named Cannonsburgh in honor of the Tennessee politician Newton Cannon. It was later renamed Murfreesboro after Revolutionary War hero Colonel Hardy Murfree.
Murfreesboro has something to offer to anyone who comes to visit or live in the city, boasting a lot of green space and a lovely historic downtown with plenty of shopping and dining. Take a peak into the past at the Cannonsburgh Village, which is a reproduction of what a working pioneer village would have looked like between the 1830s and the 1930s. Stroll amidst buildings like the old gristmill, schoolhouse, doctor's office, Leeman house, and other points of interest. The village is also home to the Word's Largest Cedar Bucket. Residents can spend past time in the Old Fort Park, a 50-acre park including multi-use trails, picnic pavilions, baseball fields, tennis courts, kids playground and a challenging 18-hole golf course.
Music lovers may rejoice in Murfreesboro's lively scene, with several music-oriented events annually. These include the Main Street Jazzfest and the Uncle Macon Days, where attendees can enjoy dancing, old-time music competitions and a plethora of talented local bands.
Art connoisseurs are not forgotten either, as there are several terrific venues in town to peruse. Check out the Murfreesboro Center for the Arts by the town square, where visitors can enjoy not only a variety of exhibits, but theatre arts, concerts, dances and even magic shows. If your thing is more in the lines of history, head to the Stones River National Battlefield, a national park which memorizes the Battle of Stones River in 1862.
Finally, for shopping and dining galore, head to the Stones River Mall where you'll find stores like Forever 21 and an abundance of great restaurants; or the Avenue Murfreesboro with its outdoor lifestyle center and shops and dining places such as American Eagle and LongHorn Steakhouse! The Historic Downtown also features a wide range of shopping and dining opportunities, all encircling the beautiful and historic courthouse.
