About Winston-Salem
Welcome to Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Winston-Salem is a city located in the Piedmont Triad region of Forsyth County, and with 235,527 residents it is the fifth largest city in North Carolina. Winston-Salem is nicknamed “Twin City” because of its dual heritage, and “City of the Arts and Innovation” for its achievements in fine arts, theatre, and technological research. Occasionally, Winston-Salem is also called “Camel City”, thanks to its history with the tobacco industry and the Camel cigarette brand. However, most locals simply call the city “Winston” in informal speech. Winston-Salem was originally two neighboring towns, Winston and Salem. The two merged in 1913, and the new town thrived much thanks to the burgeoning tobacco industry. The Reynolds family, who founded Camel cigarettes, played an important role in the history and public life of Winston-Salem. In the 1940s, over 60 percent of the town’s workers were employed by the tobacco giant. Today, historical reminders can be found throughout the city, and there are plenty of attractions for visitors to discover. Old Salem is a restored Moravian settlement from 1766, where seventy percent of the buildings are original. The village is a living history museum where skilled workers like bakers, carpenters and gunsmiths practice their crafts while interacting with curious visitors. Another interesting place to visit is the Wake Forest University Museum of Anthropology, an anthropological museum filled with artifacts and other historical items. Children may particularly enjoy an outing to the Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem, were they can take part in exhibits and programs designed to encourage creative thinking and curiosity. Art connoisseurs can rejoice in the fact that Winston-Salem is often called “City of Arts”, thanks to the many local art schools and attractions. The city boasts a fine learning institution in the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and several attractions are available including the Twin City Stage, Winston-Salem Theatre Alliance and the Piedmont Opera Theater. If you’re just looking for a good time and some shopping, head to the Hanes Mall; one of the largest shopping malls in North Carolina. You also have the Thruway Shopping Center, Hanes Point Shopping center, Hanes Commons – and several others – all featuring a multitude of stores and restaurants!
