Miramar is located in the sunny state of Florida and is home to around 130,200 people. The city is part of Broward County and the South Florida metropolitan area, situated approximately 22 miles from the city of Miami, 21 miles from Fort Lauderdale, and 11 miles from Hollywood, Florida. The city seal is inscribed with the slogan Beauty and Progress.
A man named A.L. Mailman, who envisioned a bedroom community nearby Fort Lauderdale and Miami, founded the community of Miramar in 1953. At the time, he constructed 53 inexpensive homes with concrete and flat roofs, which sold quickly thanks to the low costs. The city was incorporated in 1955, when it had a population of barely 200 people. Miramar appointed its first mayor, Robert Gordon, the same year. The mayor was the one who named the city Miramar, translating to look at the sea in Spanish, after an exclusive suburb of Havana in Cuba. While Miramar is not particularly well known, it is today one of the largest cities in size in the State of Florida.
Miramar is very family oriented and offers a large variety of education centers.
The city is served by the Broward County Public Schools, and there are many elementary, middle, and high schools to choose from in the area.
Smaller kids can go to Annabel C. Perry Elementary School, Coconut Palm Elementary School, Coral Cove Elementary School and a dozen more, while older children can enroll at New Renaissance Middle School, Henry D. Perry Middle School and Miramar High School to only name a few.
Higher education includes DeVry University, University of Phoenix, Le Cordon Bleu, Broward College, Florida International University and Nova Southeastern University.
Residents can enjoy outdoor recreation at the Miramar Regional Park, which features pools, a water park, picnic areas, athletic fields and lakeside walking trails. Those who appreciate a game of golf can also visit the Country Club Ranches with its state-of-the-art championship course. And when the ocean and more action allures, Fort Lauderdale and Miami is just over 30 min away!
