About Denton
Denton is a city located on the north end of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, and is home to around 113,500 people. The city was incorporated in 1866, and named after pioneer and Texas militia captain John B. Denton. Denton grew thanks to the arrival of a railroad line in the city in 1881, and the city received a distinguished reputation with the establishment of University of North Texas in 1890, as well as Texas Women's University in 1901. Denton is known for its vivacious music scene, with festivals like the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo, Denton Arts and Jazz Festival, and the 35 Denton Music Festival. All together, they attract over 300,000 people to the city each year. There are plenty of independent music venues in town, which have been recognized by and featured in magazines and newspapers like The Guardian, Pop Matters and even New York Times. Paste Magazine even named Denton's music scene the best in United States in 2008, so its safe to say it is a great town to rock some tunes! The schools here are another large attraction, and Denton is often characterized as a college town. Thanks to the growth of the universities, which enroll more than 45,000 students per year, educational services play a major role in the city's economy. The cultural and political hub of the city is Denton Square, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The square features local government offices and a museum, where the history and culture of the area is showcased. The historic downtown square also offers plenty of shopping and dining, with numerous local shops and memorable restaurants, some of which have been in business since the 1940s. Whether you want to shop for eclectic antiques or high-end clothing, or if you like Mexican, American Barbecue or Thai Downtown Denton has just the place for you!
