About Athens
Welcome to Athens, Georgia. Athens was previously known as Athens-Clarke County and is today a consolidated city-county. Athens is home to around 193,000 people and widely known as a college town. Athens was once a trading settlement called Cedar Shoals, by the Oconee River. In 1785, the University of Georgia was founded as the state’s first publicly funded university. In 1801, governor John Milledge bought a large piece of land and donated it to the university, naming the area Athens after the home of Plato and Aristotle in Greece. Today, Downtown Athens is the cultural focal point of the city with a plethora of nightclubs. Any night of the week, you can go out and watch talented bands and artists performing at one of the many club venues, like the 40Watt Club on the corner of Washington and Pulaski. Another place to check out is the Georgia Theater, a famous spot to catch a good gig. For art, visit the Georgia Art Museum, which has been the official state art museum since 1982. Downtown also offers award winning restaurants like The Last Resort, Farm 255 and Weaver D’s. You’ll find everything from upscale dining establishments to low-key and fast food options, as well as plenty of ethnic restaurants and plenty of bars. Much of the nightlife is catered to the younger college-crowd, especially around the Broad and Clayton Streets, but during daytime there is something downtown for every age! Shopping abounds with petite designer boutiques like Heery’s and Cheeky peach, as well as vintage stores and indie music stores. Athens is a place where culture coexists with college life, featuring a bubbling art and music scene with something for everyone to enjoy!
